The Coeur Wharf Sustainable Prosperity Fund granted $20,000 to the City for the new skate park, set to be constructed this spring into summer at Spartan Park.
“We thank Coeur Wharf Sustainable Prosperity Fund for their support on this project,” Parks and Recreation Director Tyler Ehnes said. “This grant will allow us to complete the skate project this year by Labor Day.”
“We are glad to have a part in helping your successful project become sustainable,” Danielle Nutt, Wharf Fund Administrator, said in the letter detailing the grant award.
The new, approximately 8,800 square-foot skate park, which will be located in the center of what is now the lower football field at Spartan Park, will replace the former skate park that had been located off North Main Street near Spearfish High School. Due to the construction of the school’s CTE (Career and Technical Education) Building in that area necessitating the relocation of the former skate park, Spearfish Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Advisory Board members and members of the skating community spent much of 2022 researching location and cost options to build and fund a new skate park. Since then, the location and design were solidified, with the plan for construction to begin this spring and the skate part to be opened later this summer.
The Coeur Wharf Sustainable Prosperity Fund, a permanently endowed fund within the South Dakota Community Foundation, was developed to help create lasting relationships and bring long-term social and economic benefits for all communities and people involved. It is meant to help the cause last longer than the money that is granted and has four core funding categories: health, education, arts and culture, and community development. Since the inception of the fund, it has granted a total of $657,347 from 2012 through 2024.
“We appreciate this support from the Coeur Wharf Sustainable Prosperity Fund,” Parks and Recreation Director Ehnes said. “We look forward to opening the skate park, which will be a lasting legacy for our community.”
