No one hurt in Thursday’s train crash in Sturgis

A Jeep Cherokee was hit by a train at 5:40 p.m. Thursday in Sturgis. The vehicle was driven by a 77-year-old male but was not seriously hurt in the incident.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater said the man was traveling west bound on Ball Park Road as he attempted to cross the tracks when he was hit by the northbound train.

The train — which was traveling at its correct speed — struck the vehicle on the drivers side door and pushed it about 700 feet before it stopped near McNenny Drive.

VanDewater said the train’s engineer noticed the Jeep Cherokee and applied the brakes, however, “trains can’t stop on a dime.”
